Continuing on with the plant based options this week, we are looking at Beyond Burger. I was writing a paper for a nutrition class discussing emerging plant based applications in food products and it got me curious about the health benefits or lack thereof in some of these products. Beyond Burgers are a meat alternative patty that are plant based and conveniently look and cook like animal meat.

Here are a few things to be aware of when consuming Beyond Burgers. This food seems a little high in protein for its calorie level. Protein is essential to health, but recommended dietary allowance for protein is very modest, at about 10-35% of total calories. This food is not a significant source of calcium, iron or potassium. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body and obtained mostly from dairy products, however it is often fortified in foods as well. Beyond Burger does not contain a sufficient amount of calcium so, it is recommended to get your calcium from other sources for a balanced diet. In addition, Iron is a common mineral that is found in red meats, but these Beyond Burgers, although, mimicking red meat are not a good source of iron. Hidden Ingredients in Beyond Burgers

It is also important to note that many products similar to Beyond Burgers can have hidden ingredients to make up for taste and texture. Beyond Burgers have ingredients such as methylcellulose and canola oil. Canola oil is a vegetable oil and has its benefits and risks, but it is something that you won’t find in a traditional animal meat. Methylcellulose is not a naturally occurring addictive and is found in Beyond Burgers. Overall it is important to be mindful of the ingredients we are consuming.
