Looking for a healthy candy in your kids Halloween basket?

If you are looking for a healthy candy in your kids Halloween basket then it looks like you’re going to be disappointed. When my teenager saw me working on this blog researching a bag of candy and testing them on our Food CoachTM , he said “mom you are wasting you time on this blog. All kids know that candies are unhealthy, but they are still going to eat them because they like them.” And yes, he was right. I put a variety of candies through the test this Friday and they all turned out to be a Red Dot, Watch Out Food.  Unfortunately, this included my favorite candy that I use to satisfy my sweet tooth with.

Also please be aware that all these foods are –

  • low in protein
  • Not a significant source of Calcium, Iron, Potassium and Vitamin D. These nutrients are important to be included in your daily diet and must come from other healthy food sources.

Conclusion: You may eat these candies to satisfy your sweet tooth. But be aware of its nutrient composition, healthy and unhealthy properties and be mindful about serving size prior to consuming. Please note that crystallized ginger candy found to be both high in total carbohydrates and added sugars that may have a negative impact on blood sugar. Three musketeers, Milky way and Snickers had hydrogenated oil listed among ingredient list. In the process of hydrogenation, it can create trans-fats which is proven to have negative impact on heart health.
